Angel wings across back and upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A pair of detailed feathered wings spreads across the upper arm, shoulder blades and back. Soft shading builds up the individual feathers, with lighter grey highlights and darker tones along the edges. The outstretched arm sits on the left of the frame against a dark, blurred background.

The bride arrived at my workroom above the chip shop on a wet Tuesday with a shoebox of goose feathers and a demand that I stop asking whether she was sure. She wanted the back of her gown open to the waist, and across it, worked in grey silk thread no thicker than a hair, a pair of wings. I spent three nights on the first feather alone. Each one needed a darker edge where the silk had to turn back on itself, and a paler thread laid over the top like the light that came through the chapel windows in March.

While I was pinning the lining, I found a biscuit tin tucked behind the bolts of organza. Inside were paper pattern pieces, yellowed and soft as cloth, marked in pencil with the name Ada Pryce and a date in 1958. Ada had sewn her own wedding dress with a back cut the same way, and the notes on the pieces said the wings were meant to follow the old seam lines so no one would see where one thing ended and the next began. When I laid the new pattern over them, the curves matched to the eighth of an inch.
On the day, I stood by the coat rack at the back of the church. The bride's grandmother, who had refused a chair all morning, finally sat in the front pew and reached out to touch the thread at the shoulder. I could not hear what she said, but I saw her mouth move, and the bride turned, and the grey wings opened slightly as she moved toward the altar, as if they had been waiting for the walk.
