Black and grey wing across shoulder and upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large wing tattoo spans the upper arm, shoulder and part of the upper back, with individual feathers drawn in fine detail. The feathers are rendered with soft grey shading and dark ink, giving depth and a sense of volume. The image is a close crop of the torso and arm, with the wing filling most of the frame against bare skin.

Mrs Hetty Crane had been stitching wings for the Palais since the war, and she could tell a good pinion from a poor one by the sound it made when she shook it out. "Left wing first," she said, lifting the frame from its tissue paper. "Right one's got a bad joint, so you'll not put weight on that side. And mind the glue. Feathers don't forgive you for being in a hurry."
He nodded, then asked what the routine was called. Hetty pulled a pin from her mouth and said it was called Icarus, because the management liked a name that frightened people a little before they bought a ticket. The dancer, Lenny Dawes, had been practising the lift for a fortnight, and every night he came down the stairs complaining that the feathers were heavier than the sky.
On the final night of the season the band slowed into a waltz and the lights dropped to blue. Hetty watched from the wings as Lenny turned under the spotlight, the grey plumes lifting and settling with every step, and for a moment the whole hall seemed to tilt towards him as though gravity had been asked to take a rest.
When the music stopped, one primary feather came loose and drifted down past the empty tables. It landed on the sprung floor at her feet. Hetty picked it up, smoothed the vane with her thumb, and tucked it into her apron pocket, where it would stay until next season's thread wore thin.
