Ornamental feather and mandala back tattoo
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's bare upper back shows two large black ink tattoos that curve either side of the spine. The left piece combines a circular mandala-style medallion with a flower, swirling scrolls and fine hatched fronds, while the right piece has bold feather or fern shapes with banded detailing. The image is black and white, with clean dark linework and shading set against soft, even skin tones.

Mrs Ada Pell's back room above the fish market in Grimsby smelled of bobbin dust and cold tea. Her pattern book held forty years of curls: mandalas drawn in biro, ferns copied from the coast path, a lace panel she never finished. Pippa, who swept the floor for fourpence an hour, had been told not to touch the book.

On the last Friday before the shop closed, Ada asked her to fetch the book, then the good scissors, then the ink pen. "Draw me the thing you see when you shut your eyes," she said. Pippa drew a fern unfurling into a sun, the way the light came through the cannery windows at six. Ada tapped the page with a bony finger and said the curl was wrong, too tight at the heart, so the frond would never let go.
They worked until the gulls gave up. Ada talked about her mother, who had crossed from Riga with a sewing box and nothing else, and how every doily was a way of counting the years. Pippa redrew the curl looser, and Ada made a small sound that might have been approval.
Years later Pippa saw the design on a stranger's wall in Leeds, framed, the biro lines fattened into proper black ink. The card beside it said artist unknown. She laughed, bought a cup of tea at the café opposite, and didn't correct them.
