Feather wing tattoo across back and arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A person's bare back and outstretched left arm show a large feathered wing tattoo. The feathers are rendered with fine, detailed shading that moves from dark shadow to pale highlight, giving a sense of depth and texture. The image is entirely black and grey, and the wing fills the frame from the upper arm across the shoulder blades, with the background blurred and dim.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, for oil is dear this far past the Tethers. I'll tell you how the feathers came back to Orrin's Reach, though my grandmother told it wrong and her grandmother told it wrong before her, so you may as well have it right.

Ada Quill had no wings of her own. She kept the salt kilns going at Pell Harbour, and every dusk she climbed the drying tower to watch the gulls ride the updraught, counting their primaries the way you'd count coins you didn't trust.

Then the dust came down from the north for three summers, and the gulls stopped rising. Ada went up the tower with a pot of lamp-soot mixed with fish oil and a bone needle her father had carved, and she began on an old mainsail, because it was the only cloth in the harbour large enough to hold what she had in mind. Every feather she laid was patient work: dark at the root where the shadow sits, paling to a thin white edge where the light catches. She worked until her fingers bled and the wing spread from the sail's head to its foot, grey on grey, with a shadow in every fold.

On the third morning the wind turned. Ada hoisted the sail on the tower's crane and felt the updraught take the canvas, lift it, and hold. Down in the harbour the gulls came up off the water, one after another, and they rose toward the painted wing as if it were a parent, or a promise they'd been waiting on.

That's the whole of it. Now go to bed, and leave the lamp.
