The bell at Scaldwick had been ringing for the wedding since noon, and still old Ada Brume would not let the bride cross the threshold until she had given her blessing. Peg stood in the doorway with her skirts gathered in one hand while Ada pressed a cold thumb to her forehead and said that her own mother had given her a poor blessing, so she would give Peg a better one. Every bride in Scaldwick heard the same words at her wedding, though few remembered them past the cake. Ada said them slowly, as if laying stones in a wall: may there always be an angel by my side.

Years later, when the mill race froze solid and Tam's cough turned to fever, Peg sat up three nights with the lamp guttering on the table. She had no angel to call on. She had the neighbour's girl, who brought broth in a covered jug, and the carter who fed his horse at the yard gate. On the second night the carter knocked, stamped the snow off his boots, and sat on the bench by the door without being asked. He said nothing useful. He only stayed, feeding the fire a split log at a time, until the room grew warm enough that Peg stopped shaking.

On the fourth morning Tam opened his eyes and asked who the big man was, sitting so quiet by the door. Peg looked at the bench. It was empty, and a puddle of melted snow was spreading across the flags where the carter's boots had been. She thought of Ada's cold thumb and the stones in the wall, and she laughed, and the laugh came out as something close to a sob.

She set the lamp on the windowsill, where anyone passing on the road could see that the house was still awake.
