Black ink tattoo on a person's upper back of a sleeping baby framed by wings, with the script words Never in my arms above and Always in my heart below.

Sleeping baby with wings and script on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A sleeping baby with a rounded head and curled body sits within a pair of outlined wings that curve up to form a heart-like shape. Above the figure, the script text reads Never in my arms, and below it, Always in my heart, both in solid black linework. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph of the upper back, with the tattoo centred and the skin tone and shading of the surrounding area clearly visible.

The lorry from Calais had been idling in lane nine for forty minutes when Maureen Tolley finally walked out into the drizzle with her torch and clipboard. The driver, a broad man with a Thermos wedged on the dashboard, passed his manifest down without looking at her. Frozen peas, pallets of yoghurt, two hundred cartons of nappies bound for a wholesaler in Ashford. She ticked and initialled, and was turning away when the torchlight caught the thing behind his passenger seat.

It was a cot with no mattress and no sides, the headboard carved from pale ash. Two wings rose from either end and curved up until they met over a hollow the exact length of a sleeping child. Someone had sanded the feathers so smooth that the beam slid off them like water.

"Is that for something?" she asked, though she already knew the answer would hurt.

"For the spare room," he said. "My daughter was going to need it in March. She didn't get the chance to use it, and I couldn't leave it sitting in my workshop any longer." He reached across and tapped the glass of the mirror, as if checking it was still there. "Took me all winter. I kept putting the wings in and taking them out."

Maureen stood in the wet with her clipboard against her chest. Then she wrote Nothing to declare across the bottom of the form, pressed the stamp hard enough to tear the paper, and lifted her hand. The lorry pulled away, its red tail lights swimming into the motorway glare, and she kept looking after them long after the barrier had dropped.
