Angel wings and script quote on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of two shaded angel wings with a small halo above them, with a two-line handwritten script quote in the centre reading "If our love could have saved you, you would have lived forever". The feathers are rendered with pencil-like greyscale shading and soft highlights, while the lettering uses clean dark outlines. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on pale skin, with the wings spreading across the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jay had been dead two days when I started drawing it, which my mother said was morbid and my father said was the first useful thing I had done since the thaw. I sat on an upturned bucket by the charcoal kiln with a scrap of board across my knees and the bird's wing pinned flat on a stone, and I counted the feathers the way Sam used to count the ewes through the gap in the hedge, out loud and wrong.

Sam went through the ice on Cold Mere in February. I held the rope. I was the one who let go when it burned through my palms, and nobody in Thornbury has let me forget it, though most of them say it kindly. The rector's wife came to the house afterwards with a card in her careful hand. If our love could have saved you, it read, you would have lived forever. I put it in the stove, then fished it out again before the ink had gone, and it has lived in my apron pocket ever since, where the charcoal dust works into the creases.

I drew the wings first, pressing soft and then softer so the barbs faded into the grain. Then I lettered the words along the middle, slow, because my hand kept wanting to hurry the last line. The halo was the hardest. Pencil won't make a clean ring when your fingers are black to the knuckle, so I rubbed it in with my thumb until it looked like a smudge of breath on a window.

When I finally held it up, my father looked at it a long time and said nothing, which from him was a kindness. I pinned it above the kiln door, where the smoke turns everything the same grey. By morning the damp had crept under the drawing and softened the halo into nothing, and I left it that way, because it was the only part that looked like Sam.
