Wrist lettering with two palms turned up
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two open hands are shown palms up, with a short line of serif lettering on each wrist. The left wrist reads 'i love you.' over two lines and the right wrist reads 'i know' on one line, both in thin black ink with crisp, even strokes. The photograph is black and white, with rings on several fingers and a grey, reflective surface behind the hands.

You have been meaning to say it since the sale in October, when the auctioneer wrote your father's name on the wrong line and you both stood there pretending it didn't matter. So you kneel beside him in the cold and say it plainly, the way Mum used to say the weather. "I love you." It comes out smaller than you meant it to, and steam lifts off both your mouths in the lamplight.
He doesn't look up. He just reaches over, turns your hand palm upward on his knee, and runs his thumb along the inside of your wrist, the way you used to check for conkers when you were boys. "I know," he says, as if he'd been waiting all winter to be asked.
Then the lamb arrives, slick and furious, and the two of you are laughing and crying and pulling at the cord together, and neither of you needs to say anything else.
