The gale had been on the forecast for three days, but nobody on the quay believed it until the Grey Heron came in with her wheelhouse window cracked and her net drum empty. Your father stood at the bollard with his hands in his pockets, counting the boats the way other men count prayers. Eleven in. Two still out past the Teeth.

You had the chart in your coat, the one he had pinned up in the wheelhouse that morning, its isobars pressed so hard with a biro that the paper had torn along a line of ridges. He had drawn the storm as a jag of black strokes, sharp as broken slate, and told you to keep it dry. You kept it dry through the whole afternoon, folded against your ribs, while the harbourmaster shouted into the radio and the women from the net loft stood in a row with their arms crossed.

At dusk the Heron's sister boat limped round the breakwater with a deckhand on the bow, swinging a torch in a short, angry arc. You ran. Nobody told you to run, but you did, boots slapping the wet setts, past the fish market and the chained gate to the slipway. By the time you reached the rail the two boats were tied off and the men were swearing at the cold, alive and loud.

That night you unfolded the chart on the kitchen table and copied the jagged line onto the back of it in pencil, slowly, the way he taught you to mark a shoal. Here is where the Teeth break the surface and the sea comes up white over the rock. Pin it in the wheelhouse, you told the lad with the torch, so the next skipper knows exactly where the water turns.
