Perched and flying birds on a branch on the ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two small birds perched on a bare branch that curves across the top of the foot, with two more birds in flight above it. The birds and branch are rendered as solid black silhouettes with smooth, clean edges and no shading. The ink is black on pale skin, set against a dark wooden floor and denim trouser hem.

Her uncle Tom would have argued, but Tom was in the hospice in Hereford now, and the saw was in her hand.

She took the limb down in three cuts and dragged it to the wall of the lower orchard, where the cider apples leaned in the late sun. The wasps had given up on the windfalls. Above her, a pair of starlings came down onto the bare branch as if they had been waiting for it, shuffling to the same end and settling close, the way they did in the hedge at home. She stood still with sawdust on her sleeves and let them have it.
Two more came in low over the Bramley rows, wings cupped, and she watched them drop past the wall and find nothing to land on. They wheeled once and went back the way they had come. Ruth thought about the phone call, the nurse's careful voice, and the list of things Tom had asked her to check before the frost.
Before she went in she put her palm flat on the cut end of the wood. It was still warm from the sun. The starlings did not move when she left, and when she looked back from the gate they were still there, two close together on the branch, watching the fruit as if someone had asked them to keep watch.
