Stacked triangles on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of three stacked triangles, each partly shaded with dark hatched lines, runs diagonally down the side of the ankle. The linework is thin and the shading is black and grey, with the shapes evoking peaks or steps. The photograph shows two bare feet on a wooden floor against a pale wall, with the tattoo placed near the centre-right of the frame.

The lad from the county office would want it fair copied by Monday, and she had told him twice that a guess was a guess, whatever the instrument said.

Her father had taught her to stack the triangles: each station sighted from the last, so the error ran up the chain like damp up a wall. Three peaks, three shapes, each one resting on the shoulder of the next. He had drawn them for her on the back of a seed packet in 1958, and she had kept it in the tin with the spare lenses.

The fog thinned a little after four. Through the gap she saw the far stone on Cold Lowe, exactly where the old figures put it and a fraction left of where her hopes had placed it. She wrote the bearing down clean and ruled a line beneath it.

She sat on the wet heather with the seed packet open on her knee, tracing the hatched shadows he had worked into the drawing with a blunt pencil, and found that the errors had been his all along, and that he had left them in on purpose so she would know where to look.
