Kissing couple in a heart frame on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A couple kiss in profile inside an orange scalloped heart frame, with a white inner border. The man has short dark hair and wears a dark suit and red tie, and the woman has shoulder-length wavy hair and rosy cheeks. Bold black outlines and solid fills of red, pink, blue and grey sit against a red, blue and pink rainbow behind them, and a partly visible black bird outline sits below the frame.

Dougie Pell opened the envelope in the galley with flour on his hands, and the photograph slid out face down, so for a second he saw only the cardboard back and the Weston postmark. When he turned it over he laughed out loud at the orange scalloped frame some booth man had drawn round them, as if the pier had been dressed for a wedding. Two faces, cheek to cheek, one with a red tie knotted hard at the throat, and behind them the bands of a rainbow that Maureen swore had been there that very afternoon. He had asked her twice since, and she had only smiled.

The bird had come aboard off the Cape Verdes, a small grey swift with wings that looked wrong for resting, and it settled on the rail by the forecastle and refused to leave. Cook fed it crumbs of ship's biscuit. The carpenter called it an omen and the bosun called it a nuisance. For three days it sat on the lifebuoy and watched the watch changes come and go, and nobody had the heart to shoo it back into the wind.
On the fourth morning the rail was empty, and a squall was coming up grey off the starboard bow. Dougie pinned the photograph above the chart table with two tacks, where the lamp could catch the orange border and the rosy cheeks. He wrote to Maureen that night on the back of a customs form: the bird had gone, the sea was flat as a plate again, and he had put her picture where the navigator could see it. He was glad it had stayed as long as it did. Outside, the rain came sideways across the glass, and in the frame the rainbow went on standing over them, the only colour left on the bulkhead.
