Animated princess line drawing on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line black outline of an animated female character in three-quarter view, with loose flowing hair and a braid falling over one shoulder. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the design sits across the upper arm. The plain skin tone and the blurred shop shelves behind it keep the focus on the tattoo.

The pen never leaves the paper, Mirren said, and that was the whole of her craft. Her father had surveyed the fjord coast before his lungs gave out, and he had taught her that a true shoreline is drawn without lifting the nib, so that water and rock stay one thing. When the Warden of Skerrow sent for a likeness of his daughter before the last ferry stopped for winter, Mirren carried a board, a stick of charcoal and a jar of ink she had watered to grey up the cliff path to the old lighthouse, where the girl was waiting with her arms folded against the wind.

Asta would not hold still. Every time Mirren looked up, a gust had pulled another strand loose from the plait, so Mirren gave up on keeping the hair in place and drew it the way the wind was drawing it, in long lines that curled off the page and never quite closed. The braid she laid over one shoulder, heavy and deliberate. The face she left for last, because she had always found faces the hardest part of any coast to get right. By the time she reached the eyes, the light had gone the colour of pewter and the nib was still moving.
She tried to lift it at the jaw and could not. The line simply continued down past the chin and out across the neck, into the empty margin of the board, and Asta laughed at her with real delight. The Warden, when he saw the finished sheet, said it was not a princess at all but a smudge of weather, and he refused to pay. Mirren kept it. Days later the harbour froze hard, and the girl walked out across the ice at dawn with the drawing rolled under her arm. Mirren watched from the chandlery window as the footprints went out in a single unbroken trail, never once doubling back, until the mist took them.
