Elsa from Frozen on a leg

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of the animated character Elsa from Frozen, shown from the shoulders up with a long side braid and blue-grey hair. Soft shading and clean outlines give the face and hair a cartoon look, with pink eyeshadow, blue eyes and a pale blue dress edged with pearls. Watercolour-style blue splashes and snowflakes fill the background around the figure on the skin.

Dear Marit,

You will never believe the state of the marquee on Saturday. The thaw came early, the lane up to Hollin Fell turned to slush by noon, and Aunt Ingrid stood in the porch with her hands on her hips, insisting the bride would not be walking up that aisle in wellies. Mrs Pryce from the bakery sent her boy running with a tray of pearl-iced biscuits, the ones shaped like snowflakes, and somehow that settled everyone down.

The bride had asked for her hair in a long side braid, the way she had worn it since she was small, pale as frost and pinned with two silver combs. Nobody argued. Her dress was the blue of a glacier pool at dusk, with seed pearls stitched along the neckline, and when the vicar said the words she laughed out loud because a snowflake had drifted in through the open door and landed on her cheek. It stayed there, melting slowly, until the vows were done.

I keep thinking about that. Winter always comes back for the people brave enough to stand in it, the old woman said to me afterwards, and then she pressed a paper twist of sugared almonds into my palm and went to find her coat.

Write soon and tell me whether the fell road has cleared. I am sending you one of the snowflake biscuits in the post, though I expect it will arrive in pieces.

Love, Bea
