Wonder Woman with sword on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of Wonder Woman in a red bodice and blue briefs with a white star, holding a sword raised above her head. Bold dark outlines and smooth colour shading give it a comic book look, with a golden lasso trailing behind her. The figure runs diagonally across the forearm against plain skin.

At ten past three the ward lights dropped to their night setting, and Nadia Okafor found the sluice room door propped open with a grey bucket. Someone had left the radio on low. Her cousin's boy, Tomas, had drawn her a picture at Christmas: a woman with a sword raised above her head, dark hair streaming like a flag, and a gold rope spinning out behind her like a comet's tail. He had written underneath in capitals, SHE IS NOT SCARED OF ANYTHING. Nadia had pinned it inside her locker door. Tonight, when the call bell for bed nine rang for the third time and a drip alarm chirped down the corridor, she found herself moving with the same loose, certain stride she had given the woman in the drawing.

The patient in bed nine was only confused, tugging at his cannula with the wrong hand. Nadia talked him back down slowly, the way you draw in a lasso, one loop at a time. She reset the pump, wrote the time on the whiteboard, and stood a moment at the station under the humming strip light, listening to the building settle.

Mr Pryce rang again at four. "Is the lift working?" he asked. "It is," said Nadia, and she went down the corridor to press the button herself, just to see the doors open on an empty, lit car waiting for nobody in particular.
