Cartoon woman with flowing hair on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style woman with long, flowing dark hair looks up and to the side against a turquoise sky and water backdrop, with orange and purple leaves drifting around her. Bold outlines and smooth, painted shading give the figure a soft, illustrative finish. A red cartoon creature sits at the upper right edge, and the tattoo is shown in full colour across the outer thigh.

The crate had two stamps on its side, one from a port in the south and one from someone who had clearly found the whole thing amusing, and Nell Harcourt held her torch against the slats while the lorry idled behind the barrier. Something inside was tapping. Not knocking, tapping, the way a person drums their fingers when they have waited too long for a bus.

The driver, a grey man called Tomasz who had never once in eleven years of crossings looked surprised, leaned on the tailgate and sighed. "Ornamental," he said, reading from the manifest. "Decorative crustacean, one. No commercial value." Nell pried the lid up with her biro. A claw the colour of a pillar box came out first, then a pair of eyes on stalks, then the rest of him, wedged between sacks of dried chillies and a dented tin of pomegranate syrup. Outside, the poplars along the river had started to shed, and orange and plum-coloured leaves came skating in under the shed roof as if they had been invited.
She stamped the form with a decision she could not quite justify. "Ornamental goods may be released at the owner's discretion," she said, though nobody had asked her to. The crab climbed down the tailgate, paused to pinch the corner of the manifest, and then walked with great dignity across the tarmac to the low wall above the water. The river ran under the bridge the colour of a swimming pool in a film, bright and impossible for November.
Nell watched him go over the edge with a small splash. Above her the sky was turning the same pale blue it had been all morning, and a single leaf came down and settled on the barrier arm, which was, she decided, the closest thing to a receipt she was going to get.
