Animated princess with cherry blossom and dragon

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon-style woman with long black hair and a soft smile is the centre of the design, framed by pink cherry blossom branches at the top. A small red dragon, a blue creature, a white lily and green leaves sit at the lower right, with bold black outlines throughout. The colour is saturated and the shading is soft over the face and hair, and the design wraps around the limb with the lily and leaves forming a band at the base.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the frost hasn't got into this bench yet. My gran kept the walled garden behind the mill at Cold Harrow, and she swore the plum trees along the wall were never planted by anyone. They grew, she said, from the spot where a girl stopped crying long enough to be heard. You'll not believe me. Nobody does until they've watched the blossom come out in March, pink as a fresh cut, and smelt it drifting over the lock.

The girl was Yuen Shu, the lock-keeper's only daughter, and her father had sworn she would marry no man who couldn't haul a laden barge up the weir on his own back. Suitor after suitor came with silk under one arm and promises in his mouth, and every one walked back down the towpath empty-handed. One evening she sat beneath the plum tree and wept so hard that a white lily in the millpond lifted its head to see what the noise was.

The lily had a small red dragon curled in its roots, no longer than a boot, who had been banished from the river for telling the magistrate the truth. He crawled up the bank, grumbling, and offered her a bargain: three wishes, and a blue cricket to sit on her shoulder and chirp whenever she lied. She took the cricket and refused the wishes. Wishes, she said, were what had made her uncle a liar in the first place.

She married the man who came up the towpath carrying his own stubborn heart instead of a boat, and the cricket never once chirped at him. Each March the plum petals fall on the millpond, the lily opens its white face, and my gran would sit just here throwing crumbs to the ducks, saying the river keeps what it's given and gives back the rest in blossom.
