Two birds on a branch on the back of the neck
Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
Two solid black silhouetted birds sit close together on a thin branch with a few small leaves at the right end. The bird on the left has a long tail that extends down past the branch, and the two heads nearly touch. The ink is uniform black with no shading, set against pale skin in a sepia-toned close-up photograph.

The rain had found its way under the awning by eleven, so I dragged the cages in from the kerb and left the pair of siskins out on their pole where the customers could see them. Nobody buys a bird they cannot look at properly.

Desmond Pryce had been looking at them for six Saturdays. He wanted one of them, the long-tailed one that hung down past the perch like a dropped thread, because his sister in Hull had lost her husband in March and needed something to talk to over the kettle. "Just the one, love," he said. I told him the pair came together or not at all. It was a rule my father had set out on this same stall in 1979, and I had never once thought to question it.
On the seventh Saturday the rain came sideways off the river and Desmond did not come at all. I packed up at four with the cages wrapped in newspaper. On the Monday a woman I didn't know stopped at the stall, her black umbrella dripping onto my flasks, and said he had died on the Thursday in his armchair with the wireless still murmuring. She pressed an envelope into my hand with twenty pounds inside and a note asking me to take the birds north, because the sister would know what to do with them.
I drove them up the A1 in the back of the van with the heater broken. At the services outside Doncaster I pulled in, cut the engine, and lifted the newspaper. The long-tailed bird had shuffled along its perch until its beak touched the wire of the other cage, and neither of them moved away.
