Ant sketch on the side of the neck
Blackwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of an ant in profile, drawn with loose, broken linework and rough sketch-like shading. Dark streaks and speckled dots rise above the insect, adding texture to the composition. The design is in greyscale and sits on the side of the neck, with the ear and dark hair visible in the frame.

Ray, the ant came back again this morning, the big black one that carries crumbs across the back step as if it's late for a shift. I watched it from the sink while the kettle went cold. It had a lump of bread crust twice its size and wouldn't be told to leave it. Your father would have flicked it off with a tea towel. I didn't have the heart.

The works up at Hollins has been burning since Tuesday, and the smoke comes down over the allotments in long grey streaks that stick to the washing. Mrs Pickup says it's the new kiln they've been paying for, and the men are on double time to fire it through the weekend. I stood at the line with the wet sheets and thought of you up at Catterick, learning to keep your boots square and take orders from men who never say please. The soot got on the nightdress I'd just pegged out. I've had to wash it twice.
Anyway. I went out with a jam jar and a spoon to shift the ant onto the flowerbed, and it simply stopped, turned its head at me, and went back for the crust. Stubborn as your grandfather. So I left it on the step with the rest of the bread, and I'm writing this with the window open so I can see whether it gets home. Dad's dinner is in the oven.
Come home when they let you, and bring me a proper Army story, not the one about the sergeant and the goat. Love, Mum
