Small bee tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, detailed bee sits on the forearm, shown from above with its wings spread and its striped abdomen and legs visible. The linework is fine and the striping is built up with shading, giving the insect some depth. The black and white photograph is framed closely on the arm, with a lace top and a dark chest of drawers in the background.

The swarm came over the harbour wall on the second Tuesday of June, while the fishing boats were still out past the breakwater and nobody in Porthannick had thought to shut the chandlery door. Nell Harrow heard it before she saw it, a low note like a kettle considering the boil, and by the time she reached the counter the air above the brass sextants was thick with gold.

Her father had kept bees on the roof of the net loft for thirty years and taught her that a swarm is only a family looking for a new house. Most of them clustered on the bell rope of St Ia's, but one stayed behind, walking the rim of a compass case with its wings held flat like a furled sail. She cupped it in a glass tumbler, slid a postcard under the mouth, and carried it down the cobbles to the quay where the Mary Jane was tying up.
Skipper Dunstan Vosper looked at the tumbler and then at her. "Queen?" he asked. "Worker," she said, "but the rest have gone without her." He lifted the glass, tipped it to the sun, and counted the stripes on her abdomen the way he counted fathoms. "Then she'll want a ship," he said, and gave her a berth in the wheelhouse window, a saucer of sugar water and a cork float to rest on.
That night the swarm lifted off the bell rope and poured over the harbour in one long unspooling line, and it followed the Mary Jane out past the light. Nell watched from the wall until the stern lantern was only a star. In the morning the wheelhouse window was empty, the saucer licked clean, and on the chart table, pinned beneath the tide tables, lay a single striped wing.
