Small realistic bee on the neck
Realism · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A small, detailed bee is tattooed on the side of the neck, shown in flight in a three-quarter view with its wings raised. The shading gives the body and wings volume, with brown and black banding and fine detail on the legs and wings. The ink is largely brown, black and amber, and the bee fills only a small area against the skin, with a hoop earring and a plaid shirt visible at the edge of the frame.

The Halloran Brothers' Travelling Show had lost its elephant to a farmer in Lincolnshire and its lion to a hard winter, and by the time it reached the village of Wenlow there was only one act left that anyone paid to see. Its ringmaster, old Tobias Pell, kept a wooden hive in the back of the caravan, and he said a hive was the cheapest animal a show could keep.

The bee was called Mab. She was the last of a swarm that had followed the wagons since the spring they left Norwich. Each evening she flew out from the sideshow tent, circled the paraffin lamps, and came back to rest on Tobias's sleeve. Children paid a farthing to watch her walk from his fingertip to his knuckle without once stinging anyone.
One wet evening a boy named Eli came to the tent with no coin at all. He asked whether a bee that had been so long with the show still remembered where it was born. Tobias said bees remembered everything except the cold. He let the boy lift the hive lid, and Mab came out, flew one slow circle above his head, and then rose past the canvas into the dark, towards the hedges beyond the field.
Tobias did not chase her. The next morning the wagons rolled on without the hive, and the village was quiet for a long time after. Eli kept a jar of clover honey on his windowsill for the rest of his life, and whenever a bee blundered against the glass he lifted the latch and let it out. The show never came back to Wenlow, but people say that every July a single bee could be seen circling the lamp above the hedge.
