Dear Win, I have only a minute before the 7.12 comes in, so forgive the smudge. Mr Crake is on the bench already, as he is every morning, buttoned into that long brown coat with the cuffs of his waistcoat showing. He has the look of a man who has been to a great many places and found all of them slightly too warm. Nobody at Holcombe has ever seen him eat, and I have stopped minding that he takes his tea by hovering over the urn.

Last Tuesday he asked me, very politely, whether the lamp in the ladies' waiting room was still lit at night. I said it was, and he said that was a comfort, because his mother had kept a lamp burning in a window for her husband who went down the line to London and never came back. Then he tipped his hat, a small grey thing with a net across the crown, and stepped onto the platform without looking at the carriages at all.

Yesterday the porter found a folded slip of paper on the bench. It was a single ticket, third class, to a station that does not appear on any timetable I have ever cut, and tucked inside it was a wing, clear as isinglass and perfectly dry. I have pinned it above the urn. The porter says it is a joke. I think it is a receipt.
