Upside-down bearded figure on a thigh

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a bearded figure suspended upside down from a rope or branch, with arms folded behind and legs raised. The linework is fine and engraving-like, with dense stippled dots and hatching that build the shading across the body and clothing. The piece is entirely black and grey and sits centrally in the frame against a dark background.

Old Tobias Reeve had hung from the gantry at Coldharbour for three days before the boats came in, and nobody on the quay could agree on why. His son said it was the drink. The cook at the Anchor said it was a wager with the harbourmaster over a barrel of salt cod. Only Nell Cawdry, who mended nets on the bottom step where the tide reached her boots, said he had been looking for the bottom of the sky.

He had tied his own rope at dawn, a double bowline around the iron crane arm, and let his feet swing up until the world tipped over. The gulls hung still above him. Sweat ran into his beard and he laughed at it, arms folded behind his back like a man waiting for a bus that was never coming. Nell brought him a tin of tea on the third morning and set it on the cobbles, just under his chin.

"You'll want to come down before the Sunday tide," she said.

"Can't," said Tobias. "Haven't seen the harbour from this side yet. The boats look like they're sailing into the clouds."

She looked. For a moment she saw it too: the fleet riding on the grey mirror of the water, masts pointing down into the deep as if the sea were the sky. Then she untied the rope herself, caught him as he came down, and they both laughed until the gulls lifted off the crane.
