The parcel you sent before the drifts came has arrived, bruised but alive: a single cutting from the old pink rose on Father's wall, wrapped in a damp rag, with two buds still shut tight as fists. I have set it in a jam jar on the sill above the stable yard. Each morning I hold it to the window and look for the green going dark at the joints, and each morning it is still green, which I am choosing to take as a kindness.

Tobias, the landlord's boy, came in off the Hexham road with a cracked fiddle and no money, and has been stranded here ever since. Yesterday he sat by the jar with a stub of charcoal and drew the leaves for me, grey-green on the underside, darker where they meet the stem. He said the rose would not open until the thaw, that roses are more patient than people. I told him that was a poor thing to say to someone who has been waiting on the post since Michaelmas.

I have pressed one of the leaves between the pages of this letter so you can see the colour of it for yourself. Tell Father the bud is holding on. I think it means to open the morning the coach road is cleared, and I intend to be standing at the gate when it does.
