You find the stag in the hop garden at Ashdown Farm the week after the last frost, standing among the cut poles as though he has been waiting for someone to come and count him. His left antler has grown up crooked, forked like a dead elm, and at the fork there is blossom, pale pink with bruised yellow at the heart, as if the spring mistook him for a tree.

Mrs Pell at the post office says it is a judgement. Her husband, who keeps the bicycle shop by the bridge, says it is a deformity and the vet in Marlow ought to look at it. You say nothing. You have a tin of barley sugar in your coat pocket meant for the cart horse, and you hold one out to the stag instead. He takes it from your palm with lips like wet leather, careful as a clerk counting change.

By June the blossom has set into small green fruit, and the village has decided it is bad luck either way. Your brother wants to shoot him for the pot. You walk out before dawn with the bread knife and a paper bag of windfalls, and the stag is already waiting by the gate with the branch lifted above the hedge, its leaves turning silver in the first light.

You leave the fruit on the stone wall. By morning one apple is gone and a single petal lies in the lane, pink as a sweet wrapper. Nobody in Ashdown shoots a stag again without first looking up.
