Antler flash sheet in nine pairs

Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows nine pairs of antler designs arranged in a three by three grid, each pair mirrored across a central gap. The antlers vary from thick, heavy branching forms to fine, sparse tines, with some drawn as solid silhouettes and others with open, tapering points. The image is entirely black ink on white, with no shading or colour.

Dear Mr Halloran,

The crate came off the 14.20 from Carlisle on Tuesday, strapped with baler twine and smelling of wet hessian, and nobody on the platform would claim it. Porter Dunn wanted it burned. I opened it instead, because the label bore only your name and the words "Keep them matched", and inside, wrapped in newspaper from 1961, were nine pairs of antlers, each bundled apart from its partner.

I have counted them three times. The heavy ones, black and thick as bramble roots, lie at the bottom of the crate. The thin ones with their tines lifted like fingers are packed nearest the lid, as if they were the last thing put in. Every pair has a left and a right, and I cannot tell by looking which half belongs to which, only that the points on one side always lean in towards the gap, as if reaching across it for something.

The stationmaster says the guard's van will carry them only if you come to sign for them, so come on the Thursday train. Bring the other half of the pair you left on the bench in March, the one with the broken brow tine. Dunn has kept it in the safe under the timetable boards, and I have promised him you will not swear at him this time.

Yours, with the kettle on, Margaret Ackroyd Lost Property, Penrith
