Dear Ruth, the stencil came back from the printers on Tuesday and it is wrong again, though not in the way you warned me about. They have cut the bucks too narrow in the neck, so the antlers look as if a tide is pulling them off the board. I told Mr Pardoe I would not hang a sign with a buck that looked caught in a gate. He said the pub had been called The Two Harts since his grandfather's day and nobody had ever complained. I said nobody had ever looked at it properly either.

So I cut my own card. I used the old kitchen knife and a steel rule, because the scalpel slips on wet board. Two bucks face each other, one turned a little so its antlers clear the other's. Between them I left a heart shape, not a fat valentine but the narrow one the hedgers used to scratch on gate posts. I did not put a bow on either of them. Mr Pardoe's niece asked for one, and I told her the bucks were not hers to dress.

On Thursday I laid the card on the board, and Pardoe came in with his boots still muddy from the church field. He stood there a long while without speaking. Then he took the knife from my hand and cut a small notch at the base of the heart so the paint would have somewhere to run out. I meant to stop him and found I could not. It was a better sign for it.

We hang it Saturday. The black will weather to grey by Michaelmas, the antlers will lift in the rain, and some stranger will tell the new landlord the bucks are looking at each other. They are, Ruth. I made sure of it.
