A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the gardener at Hollin Court cut the hedges back to black wood, and every spring four scorpions came up out of the clippings, one by one, their tails curled like bracken before it opens. Nobody in the village had ever seen them come up. They were simply there by the sundial, sharp-legged and patient, when Ada Pell went out with her shears on the first warm morning of the year.

Ada was the gardener's girl and the first in her family to ask why. Her grandmother said the scorpions were the old lord's bargain. He had taken the garden from the marsh folk, and the marsh folk asked only that something of theirs be left to tend the walls. So the scorpions tended them. They swept the gravel of slugs, climbed the pear tree at dusk to sit in its fork like thorns, and never once stung a child who ran barefoot across the lawn.

That summer the lord's grandson came with a surveyor and a plan for a tennis court. He stood on the sundial, laughed at the curled tails, and told Ada to fetch the pegs. She said nothing. That night the wall gate rattled on its hinges, and in the morning every peg the surveyor had driven was pulled up and laid in a ring around the sundial, each one bent into a hook.

The grandson planted bean canes instead. When Ada went out early the next spring, she found the scorpions sitting at the head of each row with their tails raised, keeping watch over the green shoots. They are still there, if you go out early enough to see them.
