Flash sheet of black botanical wreaths, laurel sprigs and leafy border designs on a textured white background, drawn in a botanical style with no body placement shown.

Botanical wreath and garland flash sheet

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows dozens of small designs arranged in a grid: circular wreaths at the top, laurel and branch motifs in the middle, and long horizontal leafy borders at the bottom. The linework is mostly solid black with some lighter grey variations, with leaves and sprigs drawn in a loose, hand-inked style. The sheet has a plain, textured off-white background and is composed as a reference page of repeatable motifs.

By the third Tuesday of August the hall of Gull Rest smelled of size and wet plaster, and Mrs Edith Harrow had decided the wreaths would go up whether the paper dried or not. Mr Vell, who had signwritten shopfronts along the front for forty years before his hands began to shake, sat on the bottom stair with a tin of Indian ink and a jar of water gone the colour of weak tea.

'Leaves go round like a clock,' he said, drawing one circle freehand, then another, though the lines wobbled. 'Start at twelve and don't look back at what you've done.' Mrs Harrow counted the lodgers' rooms on her fingers. Four rooms, four wreaths, and a fifth for the landing where the damp had come through the ceiling in the shape of a map nobody could name.

He worked through the afternoon while the gulls argued on the roof. Each wreath came out a little different: one heavy with oak, one thin as a bicycle spoke, one he filled in grey when the ink ran dry. A girl from the bakery brought them tea and asked why the leaves weren't green. Mr Vell said ink had no need of green, and the sea would do the colouring soon enough.

When the last one was done he signed the corner, crossed it out, and wrote Harrow instead. Mrs Harrow pinned the wreath above the door of room four, where guests came and went all week, and it was only later, locking up with the lamp in her hand, that she saw the ring of leaves had closed on itself without a break, the way the tide comes back over the sand to meet its own footprints.
