Antler tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare leg rests on a grassy lawn with a small black antler motif tattooed on the ankle and lower calf. The antlers are drawn as a simple solid silhouette with a branching shape and no shading. The image is mostly warm, sunlit greens and skin tones, with a fence and trees in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every March the stag came down through the gap by the bandstand, and every March Mrs Okafor swore she would mend the railings properly. She never did. The park had been her husband's before it was hers, and she had learned that the creatures that wandered in were usually better company than the people who paid the council tax.

That spring the antlers came away in the long grass beside the fence, pale as candle wax and nearly as long as her forearm. She found them while cutting back the daisies. She lifted the first one, then the second, and sat on the bench with both across her knees, trying to remember whether any of the bowls club had ever mentioned a stag. None had. The stag had simply been here, the way the oaks were here.

She carried them home on the bus, which made the driver laugh until he saw her face. Her grandson, who drew for a living, said the branching was the best part, how each tine split and split again until it looked less like bone and more like a river seen from a plane. He traced one on tracing paper and inked it solid black, so it looked cut out of the night.

Next morning the stag was back by the bandstand, grey at the muzzle and missing a point on one side, watching her as though she owed him nothing. She set the antlers down in the grass where he could see them. He lowered his head and nosed them once, then turned and walked back through the gap, leaving her the morning and taking nothing else.
