Antlered hare with monocle on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A horned hare or jackalope head in grey and brown, with a monocle over one eye and a thin moustache, sits in an oval frame of twisted rope set with green gemstones. A bright magenta background sits behind the animal, and a fabric-like drape with a green jewel rises above its antlers. The shading is soft and detailed on the fur, and the bold outlines and saturated colour give the piece a strong, graphic finish.

Sit closer, the gulls don't carry words the way the wind does, so mind your ears. Old Tobias Quill kept the chandlery on Gannet Steps, and one wet Tuesday a hare came in with a glass screwed into his left eye and a loop of green glass beads wound round his antlers. He wanted a lantern that had drowned, the brass one from the Morrow wreck, and he set a silver thimble on the counter as payment.

Tobias laughed and told him the lantern was worth ten thimbles. The hare only twitched his neat moustache and said that a lantern is worth what it has seen. So Tobias fetched it from the back shelf, black with salt, and the hare held it up to his monocle. Through the glass the wick lit again, a small yellow flame, and in its light Tobias saw the Morrow sailing in, all its sails stitched from one bridal veil, the bride herself standing at the rail with her hair full of sea.
The chandler's hands went cold. The hare took the lantern, unhooked the grey silk from his antlers and laid it on the counter, folded like a letter. "Return that to the water," he said, "and the tide will come in sweet for your boy." Then he was out the door, a brown shape going up the steps into the fog. When Tobias looked down, the silk had gone, and the thimble lay in the puddle on the floor, shining green where the light touched it.
