Antlered woman with flowers and third eye

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink drawing of a woman with stag antlers, a flower crown and a third eye on her forehead, wearing a high-necked collar with a symbol and ring pendant. Her long fingernails are drawn as sharp claws, and her hair flows in fine parallel lines and curling swirls. The linework is bold outlines with fine hatching for shading, shown on white paper with pens and a hand at the left edge.

Gideon Marr had his hand on the gatepost of the upper pass when the sleet turned sideways and the lantern guttered out. Below him the road had vanished into cloud. Above, a figure stood on the cairn where the old drovers left their coins, antlers branching black against the sky, a ring of white blossom caught in the wind like the last of a summer that had forgotten to end.

"You are late for the ford," she said, though he had told no one he meant to cross that night. Her voice seemed to come from close by and from far off at once. He thought of his sister's wedding in the valley, the cheap ring he had carried in his coat for a week, and the tallow-man in Carrick who had warned him that the pass keeps what it is given and gives back only what it is owed.

She held out a hand with long grey nails, curved like sickles. A silver pendant hung at her throat, a ring swinging below a bar of strange marks, and above her brows a third eye opened and did not blink. "Pay the toll, or walk the road you came by." Gideon had nothing but the ring. He turned it once in his fingers, thinking of the bride waiting with her shoes already laced, and laid it in her palm. She closed her fingers over it and looked at him for a long while.

"Keep the lantern," she said at last, pressing it back into his hands, its flame steady now. "Carry it down to the girl and tell her the pass has had its due." When the sun cleared the ridge, the cairn was bare stone and frost. In the valley a bell began to ring for a wedding that had been put off all winter, and Gideon found the ring's silver grit still stuck to his palm.
