Woman with wolf headdress sketch

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing shows a woman's face with heavy wavy hair, framed by a wolf's head with open eyes and a snarling muzzle. Trailing leaves and flowers curl around the wolf and the woman's hair, and a beaded necklace with pendants sits below her chin. The linework is sketchy with soft pencil shading on the face and fur, and the image is entirely black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf had been dead three winters before Marta's grandmother let the ivy come down from the rafters. The leaves had dried to paper and the pale flowers crumbled when she touched them, but the head still held its shape, muzzle lifted, eyes fixed on the door as though it expected someone to knock. Her grandmother called it the grey one's last watch, and nobody in the valley would say why the hunters had left the pelt on the mountain.

Marta spent the damp weeks restringing the necklace her mother had left, bead by bead: cut bone, river shell, and one small pendant of tarnished silver. She held the cord between her teeth when her fingers went numb. Each time she finished a strand she hung it on the peg beside the wolf, and each morning the strands were tangled again, as if someone had been wearing them in the night.

At midsummer the whole valley climbed to the high meadow for the fire. Marta pulled the head over her own hair, leaves and all, and walked into the smoke with the beads cool against her collarbone. The old men stepped aside. The dogs stopped barking. For the length of one song she was nobody's granddaughter and nobody's daughter, only the shape the wolf had been waiting to take.

When the fire burned low she slipped away to the pines and set the head on a flat stone. Morning found the stone wet with dew and the beads laid out across the grass, straight as a surveyor's chain, pointing up into the trees. She followed them until the ground fell away, then stopped, because the wolf's eyes had been open all night and she did not want to know what they had been watching.
