Mountain and river landscape in a diamond

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond-shaped panel shows a mountain range, a winding river and a cluster of pine trees, built from stippled dots and fine linework. Shading moves from light stipple in the sky to denser dark areas in the trees and along the river bank. The tattoo is in black and grey on the inner upper arm, with another tattoo partly visible above it and a dark t-shirt at the edge of the frame.

The departure board has been stuck on the Inverness line for an hour, and the man beside you keeps refolding his paper map into the same small diamond, as if the country inside might come out better each time. You do the same with yours. The glen it shows is cut sharp by contour lines, with a blue thread winding down through a crowd of pines toward a village nobody has bothered to name.

Your grandmother drew that country for you once, on the back of a seed packet, pressing the peaks out with her thumbnail. She said the trick was to stipple the trees rather than line them, so the light could get between the branches. You never learned to do it properly. You learned instead to wait at stations, where trains arrive from somewhere you have never been and leave before you have decided whether to board.

When the tannoy finally crackles, it is only for a different platform. The woman opposite gets up, and her coat catches the edge of your map and tears a small white notch out of the river. You do not mind. You know where it runs.

Out past the cutting the rain thickens into the dark shape of the hills, and the real river must be down there somewhere, doing what it has always done, going down through the pines without asking anyone to follow.
