Stag and peonies in a diamond frame on thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A stag's head and antlers in profile sit above a cluster of peonies and leaves, all enclosed by a thin geometric diamond outline. The deer is rendered with fine linework and soft grey shading, while the flowers use layered shading for depth. The design is in black and grey ink and is centred on the outer thigh, with a draped dark fabric and a brick wall in the background.

The stag came down from the beech wood the week the bell cracked, and Brother Oswin found it standing in the cloister beds among the peonies as though it had been sent to inspect them. He was told to keep those beds for the Michaelmas altar, so he went for the dogs and the long pole, and the stag looked at him over its shoulder with a calm that made him put the pole down.

Abbot Matthias wanted the animal driven off and the flowers cut. Brother Hild, who kept the cellar and had the most sense of anyone in the house, said a stag that walks into a monastery has come for a reason, and nobody had yet thought to ask it. The abbot said that was nonsense, and that the house had enough reasons of its own. So Oswin went out at dusk with a hand bell and a basket, and the stag let him come close enough to see that one of its tines had broken clean off in some past winter and healed over smooth.

He cut only the heads that had gone brown at the edges. He left the open ones, and the leaves that had come up in the shape of a little diamond between the flagstones, the way the old garden plan had them drawn. When he looked up the stag had gone back toward the trees, and the bell had stopped swinging on its hook as if it had never rung at all.

In the morning the abbot counted the cut stems, found the basket honest, and did not ask again which of the two of them had been let in.
