Black cat silhouette in a crescent moon
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a cat sits inside a crescent moon, facing right with its tail curling into a spiral at the lower right. The crescent's upper edge is jagged, resembling a crown or castellated skyline. The ink is flat black with no shading, set against lightly freckled skin lit by strong diagonal sunlight, with a partial green tattoo visible at the lower left edge.

Tonight the moon was only a paring over the chimneys of Crowley Row, and the cat had not moved since the church clock struck nine. Its outline looked cut from the sky, the crest of the wall running up into a ragged crown of spires, the way the roofs of the old mill stood against the gaslight across the railway.

"Sid's bed is by the gate," she told it, pulling her fleece tighter. "You can have the gate or you can have the moon, not both." She had been digging up the bulbs her husband planted the autumn before he died, and she had found them rotten, every one. The cat watched her with the patience of something that had seen a great many women with trowels.
When she straightened, her back cracked like kindling. The cat had gone. In its place, pressed into the frost where it had been sitting, was a long curl of paw prints looping inward and ending in a spiral as tight as a watch spring.
She stood a while in the cold. Then she knelt, pushed a fresh bulb into the first turn of it, and went in for her tea.
