Aquarius zodiac symbol on the lower abdomen
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black tattoo of the Aquarius zodiac symbol, formed of two stacked wavy lines, sits on the skin of the lower abdomen. The lines are bold and even with a slightly brushed edge, and the ink is uniformly dark. The tattoo is centred in a close crop, with a patterned bikini bottom and a fingertip holding the waistband at the bottom of the frame.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, for this is a tale about the well beneath the chapter house, which the brothers say was dug before the abbey and has never once run dry. Brother Anselm drew from it every morning of his life, two buckets on a yoke, and he crossed the cloister the way a river crosses a valley, slow and certain, never hurrying the water.

One winter the bell rope froze and the abbot took to his bed, and the brothers came to Anselm asking for water to wash the dead. He went down the stone steps with his lantern and found the cistern low and black, with two ripples on its surface where no wind could reach. The ripples ran against each other, then folded together, the way two lines of a psalm meet at the end of a verse. He stood there so long that his lantern guttered and nearly went out.
When he climbed back up he carried no water, but he told the abbot that the well was not empty, only waiting to learn which way the people above wished it to flow. The abbot did not believe him. Anselm went down the next morning, and the morning after that, and by spring the cistern stood full to its lip, and nobody could say how.
Some say the water still keeps that pattern, two waves held in one slow turn, and that if you lean over the rim at dawn you will see it. I have leaned. I have seen only my own face looking back. But the buckets still hang on their hooks by the door, and the water still knows its own way home.
