Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a mermaid with flowing hair and a curved tail sits on the inner forearm, with two small fish silhouettes trailing below her. The design uses flat black ink with no shading or grey tones, and the lines are clean and simple. The tattoo is shown in close, slightly angled view against a pale background, with the subject's long hair visible at the left edge.

The tent had been mended so many times that the canvas looked like a patchwork coat, and still the rain found the seams. Old Petra Vane kept the mermaid in a glass tank behind the ring curtain, though nobody had seen the water in it run clear since the spring the Severn flooded the fairground at Ludlow.

Her name on the bill was Marisol. She had come up the river as a girl no one could account for, wrapped in a fisherman's oilskin, and she sang under the water, which was the trick, though the crowds never heard it over the hum of the pump. Petra fed her mackerel from a bucket and told her the audiences were thinning because the world had stopped believing in anything that could not be bought on a phone.
Then the pump failed in February. Petra sat up three nights with a paraffin lamp, coaxing it, while the two little fish Marisol had named Tuesday and Mend drifted in their jar beside the tank. On the fourth morning Marisol asked to be carried to the bank. Petra did not argue. They went down together through the wet grass, and the girl slid off the stones into the brown current with a sound like a cupboard door closing.
Petra kept the tank. Some nights she sits beside it with the lamp turned low and counts the fish, and there are always two.
