Small seahorse and symbol finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is photographed palm down, showing four small tattoos on the fingers. The largest is a seahorse on the middle finger, with fine, delicate linework and soft grey shading. Smaller symbols sit nearby: a ship's wheel on the middle finger, a compass star on the little finger and a simple symbol on the ring finger, all in black ink against pale skin.

Dear Ysolde,

The seahorse kept turning up in the nets again this week, grey and stiff as a clothes peg, and Master Harrow swore it was the same one we freed in March. I told him seahorses do not keep appointments. He said the Mere Court has a standing order for them and that I should mind my manners. So I have kept the little fellow in a jar of brine on the sill, where he bumps gently against the glass as if he is trying to read the lettering.
The wheel on the old chart you sent came off the Pellworth gate, the one the king had melted down for shot. Harrow says a ship's wheel is only a gear for steering, but I have decided it is a promise: whoever holds the wheel must go where the stars say, not where the tide wants. The compass star I copied out in the margin of the ledger, eight points, each one a different colour of ink because I ran short of black.
Last night the wind went round to the north-east and the bell in the chandlers' yard rang itself, which Harrow says is nonsense. I went down to the quay with the lantern and the seahorse jar under my coat. The water was black as slate and perfectly still. When I set the jar on the bottom step, the seahorse curled his tail round the glass and let go, and the sea took him back without a splash.
Come home before the spring tides, Ysolde. The compass is still pointing at you.
Yours, through all weather, Idris
