Arabic script tattoo on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single line of Arabic script is tattooed horizontally across the upper back, close to the shoulder blade. The lettering is set in black ink with clean, even strokes and smooth curves, and the skin around it is evenly lit with a soft blur in the background. The composition is tight and centred on the words, with no other tattoos visible.

He wrote the stamps for the drivers, the names on the crates, the warnings on the oil drums. Hands that write for a living learn to hate a wobble, and Yusuf hated them more than anyone.

One morning a boy came through with a crate of glazed jars, and the officer asked Yusuf to write the destination on the lid. The reed pen split on the second letter. A thin black thread of ink ran sideways out of the stroke, and Yusuf swore and reached for a fresh nib. The officer leaned over the counter and said, Leave it. That is the only honest mark on this whole crossing.
Yusuf did not leave it. He lay awake that night turning the words over, and by dawn he had cut a slate with the line that every craftsman in the old souk knew and nobody believed: beauty is the flaw. He hung the slate above his stall and mocked himself for it every day.
The boy came back a year later with a single jar that had survived the desert. Its rim was chipped and the glaze had run down one side like a river after rain. Yusuf turned it in the light, and laughed, and said the pen had been right all along.
