Fine black linework infinity symbol with the word hope in script across the inner wrist and forearm.

Infinity symbol with hope on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small black tattoo on the inner wrist, showing an infinity symbol with the word hope written in cursive script through its centre. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears to be a single dark tone on pale skin. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a plain beige background, with the arm running diagonally across the top of the image.

Dear Hal, the ice finally came off the cut on Tuesday, so Father has stopped swearing at the tiller and started swearing at the lock gates instead, which he says is progress. We're tied up below Stoke Mill now, the Wren Mary's cabin smelling of paraffin and wet dog, and I've spent every evening on the roof deciding whether you were serious about the paint tin.

Mum found the old chart in the lazarette while she was hunting for spare fuses. It's the one from the year we bought her, with the route pencilled down the margins: Oxford, Thrupp, Banbury, every lock numbered like a raffle ticket. Along the bottom edge someone had drawn a figure eight lying on its side, and beside it, in her slanting hand, the word hope. I asked her what it meant. She said it meant the river goes round and round and never runs out, so you only have to keep working the handle.

Hal, I've made up my mind. In the spring I'm going back to the boatyard to ask Mr Okonedo whether he'll let me work the hire fleet through the summer. He said I had good hands for knots. You don't have to answer this quickly.

I've copied the sign onto the back of this page so you'll know what I mean, though my loops look like a drunk man's shoelace. Bring the paint tin if you still want it. The gate at Thrupp sticks, but it always opens in the end.
