Armoured truck with lettering on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black outline drawing of an armoured vehicle with a large mounted cannon on its roof, shown in side view with heavy wheels. The words FUTURE NOMADS sit beneath the vehicle in a simple sans serif lettering with speed lines on the first letters. The work uses solid black fills and thick uniform linework on pale skin, with no shading or colour.

Nobody on the ninth floor of Tanner Court believed Dalia Ross when she said the grey truck under the bin chute could outrun the buses. Her brother said it was a rust bucket with a broom handle for a gun. She told him anyway, every evening, while the lift stuck between floors and the pigeons argued on the balconies.

The nomads had come up from the car park the winter the motorway closed. Their leader was a woman called Sunday Pike, who kept her coat inside out so the rain would not recognise her. They drove a truck with wheels as tall as a man, and on its roof sat a cannon that fired nothing but rolled-up leaflets from the old council's promises. Children followed it to the end of the estate and came back with their pockets full of confetti.

When the demolition notice went up on the lobby door, the council men came with clipboards and a van of their own. Dalia climbed to the roof, found the keys where Sunday had hidden them inside a tin of peppermints, and drove the truck down the ramp at dawn. The council men stepped aside, because the cannon was pointed at a sky full of gulls and nobody wanted to be the one who asked why.

The truck left the estate with FUTURE NOMADS painted down its side. Behind it the tower stood with one lit window, and in the lift shaft, between the fourth floor and the fifth, a shopping bag hung caught in the doors, waiting for someone to come and fetch it.
