Small figure on a jetty, forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a small figure in a pointed hat sitting on the end of a wooden jetty, holding a line over the water. A tall tree trunk stands at the left, with a faint distant shoreline and a few lines suggesting water and land on the right. The linework is fine and even, with minimal shading, and the scene is rendered entirely in black ink on a pale forearm against a soft grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jetty had been losing planks since the spring floods, so Ida Varga walked out on the one that still held, carrying a bamboo rod she had cut from the reeds behind the boathouse and a tin of worms she did not intend to use. Her hat was the tall pointed kind her grandfather wore to sit out the rain, and it made her easy to find from the shore, which was the point of it. Behind her the old alder leaned over the water like someone listening at a door.

She sat with her boots dangling above the grey skin of the lake and let the line sink. Across the water a low bank of land lay under cloud, and a few ripples worked their way toward her from somewhere she could not see. Nobody in the village expected her to catch anything. Her brother had landed a pike three summers ago and told the story so often that the fish had grown to the length of a door, and since then the lake had been left alone to fish for itself.

At noon the float dipped, then rose, then lay flat. Ida lifted the rod, found the hook bare, and laughed out loud at the water, which took it without comment. She began to pack the tin away, slowly, the way you fold a letter you have decided not to send. Then she reached for the rod again and left the line where it was.

When the light tilted toward the alder, her brother came down the path with a basket and a question about supper. He found her still sitting at the end of the jetty, rod across her knees, hat tipped back, watching the far shore fade. "Did you catch anything?" he called. "Not yet," said Ida, and she did not turn around.
