Classic muscle car and smoke on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A rear three-quarter view of a dark classic muscle car with a chrome bumper, round red tail lights and a blank number plate. The car is rendered in smooth black and grey shading with highlights on the body and glass, and it sits within billowing smoke or tyre haze that fades into the surrounding skin. The composition fills the forearm, with the car centred and the smoke wrapping around the arm.

The lift has been dead since March, so you take the stairs of Hollins Tower two at a time, past the graffiti and the smell of wet cardboard, and come out into the car park just as Dez drops the clutch. The old coupe he bought off a man in Walsall sits low and black under the sodium lights, its chrome bumper catching the orange, its two round red tail lamps glowing like something told to wait. Smoke boils up from the back wheels and rolls across the bays, thick as wool, and somewhere on the ninth floor a dog starts barking.

Dez won't stop when you wave. He never does. He takes the loop round the bins with the rear end squirming, and for a few seconds the whole car park vanishes in grey haze and you can taste rubber on your teeth. Marnie is leaning on the railings with a vape, counting out loud. Nobody ever counts the same number twice. Her nan's window is the only one lit on the fourth floor, and the net curtain shifts once, then goes still.

When the smoke thins, the car is sitting exactly where it started, engine ticking, number plate blank because Dez peeled the registration off last week and won't say why. He leans out, grinning, and asks if you're getting in or walking home. You tell him you'll walk. You don't. You stand in the drifting haze and watch the tail lights shrink down the ramp, feeling the whole block hum around you, nine floors of people pretending they can't hear.
