Arrow and chevron tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two fingers of a hand are shown in a black and white photograph. One finger carries a fine line arrow with two leaf-like feathers and a diamond tip, drawn in thin outline. The other finger has a solid black chevron shape with striped bands below it and a small dot beside it, set against a plain dark background.

The man from the council came again on Tuesday about the fence. I told him the fence has stood since before either of us was born and it can stand until you are home to argue with him. He wrote something down and looked at the plum tree instead, which I took as agreement. Mrs Okafor next door has asked after you twice. She says the sparrows have taken to nesting in her gutter and she blames you for encouraging them.
I went through the box in the loft yesterday. Your old arrow-shaped labels are still there, the ones you cut from tin with the snips and stamped with a nail. I have pushed one into the soil beside the bulbs so I can find them when they flower. The chevron ones have gone soft at the corners. I am keeping them all, the way you asked me to keep things that were going to grow.
Come home when the swallows do. I will have the beds done by then, and I will have stopped pretending I know what I am doing with the roses.
All my love, Ruth
