Ada Brennock kept this inn when my grandmother was a girl, and she hung a willow hoop over every bed upstairs, the way her mother had taught her. Inside each ring she laced a six-petalled flower cut from pale felt, because she said a flower keeps a sleeper's thoughts from wandering off the path.

One February a carter called Tomas Vell came in with frost in his beard and a boy of nine asleep across his knees. The boy would not stop dreaming out loud. Every night, once the lamp was out, he talked about a lake that froze in the shape of a star, and a grey gull that waited on the ice for him. Ada climbed the stairs with her basket of goose quills, tied two feathers to the cord beneath the hoop, then strung seven glass beads down the line like drops of water hanging from a eave.

On the third morning the boy came down to breakfast quiet and easy. The hoop had been turned to face the wall, and both feathers lay on the windowsill, damp from the melt. Below the inn the lake lay flat and grey, its ice starred with cracks. When Ada asked after the gull, the boy shrugged and said it had flown on without him, and he had no need to wait any more.

Ada kept the feathers in a biscuit tin with her mother's thimble. Every winter since, when the snow comes over the pass, she hangs them back on a fresh hoop, because even a dream that has finished leaves a few feathers behind.
