Here and now script on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a fine line script tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm, reading "here" with an ampersand and "now" running diagonally down the skin. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The image is black and white, with soft light and a shallow focus that keeps the lettering as the clear subject.

Old Maren the scribe had a rule that she never wrote a word she could not say aloud at the well. So when the salt merchant's boy came to her table in Tarsa with a wax tablet and asked for a charm to bring his father home from the eastern road, she turned the tablet over in her hands and shook her head.

"Your father is somewhere on that road tonight," she said. "I cannot write him closer."
The boy sat down anyway. He had walked four days and his sandals had worn through at the heel. Maren took her stylus and made two marks: a small hook, the sign for and, and beside it a line that ran down the wax like a dropped thread. "Here," she read, tapping the first word, then the hook, then the long slanting line. "Now." She told him to carry the tablet to the place where the road bent into the reeds, to say the two words there, and then to stop speaking.
He did as he was told. At the bend he found his father's mule standing in the shallows, cropping the reeds, and beside it a man sitting on a stone with his head in his hands. The boy said the words and then he kept his mouth shut, as instructed, and in the silence the father looked up. Maren never charged for a charm after that. She said the tablet had only ever done what any word does, which is to stand exactly where it is pointed.
