Small chevron and dots on a finger
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo sits on the side of a finger, forming a downward-pointing chevron with three dots above it. The linework is built from fine stippled dots and short strokes, with no shading or colour. The photograph is taken straight on with a dark vignette, and the hand fills most of the frame.

Mrs Hollis had the telegraph key at Marrowby Station from six until two, and the wire had been quiet since the Tuesday storm took the poles out past the reservoir. Wilf Dunning sat across from her with a pencil behind his ear and a cup of tea going cold, listening to the sounder click against the silence like someone tapping on a door they did not expect to be answered.

When the line came back at dusk, the first thing through was a single letter, sent over and over by a man in Kirkhaven who had lost his wife's name somewhere between the two towns. Dots and dashes, a stammer. Wilf wrote it in the ledger with the small downward wedge he used to mark a message as checked, then three dots above it where he always set down the count. Mrs Hollis said it looked like a bird coming in to land. He said it looked like a gate left open.
They sent the man his message back, and he sent one of his own, and by the end of the week the whole valley seemed to be talking in fragments through the wire. Wilf stopped minding the quiet. He began to listen for the three short taps that meant S, and the rest of the words would fall into place around them like stones across a ford.
On the last evening of the storm, the sounder gave three dots and then nothing. Wilf waited, pencil lifted. Mrs Hollis reached over, pressed her own key once, and sent back the only answer a clerk is allowed to send when she does not know the rest: go on.
