Arrow and circles on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single arrow runs vertically with a feather-like fletching at the top and a diamond-shaped tip at the bottom, with two thin overlapping circles and small arrowheads along its shaft. The linework is fine and precise, with some areas of soft shading and dotted texture in the feathers and circles. The design is in black ink only, set against a blurred studio background with framed pictures on the wall.

Ada Mercer had been drawing the same circle for three days, and the compass point kept slipping into the groove her father had worn in the table. Outside, the Mary Lowe was already rocking at the quay, her hull paint lifting in strips where the salt had got under it. The harbourmaster wanted the bearings for the Dogger grounds by noon, and the chart on the table held nothing but pencil ghosts of last week's errors.

She rubbed out the arc and started again, larger this time, so the second ring overlapped the first in a lens of clean white paper. Where the two circles crossed she put a dot, the way her father always had, because he said a boat was only ever lost at the point where two things you trusted stopped agreeing. Below the lens she ruled a line straight down the page and marked it with small barbs, a shaft of fletching pointing back the way they had come. The feather at the top she drew last, one stroke at a time, the way you would count a net.
Her brother came in smelling of diesel and tar, hands raw from the winch. He looked at the sheet and said nothing, which from him was praise enough. "Wind's backing south-west," he said. "Dad would have gone out."
"Dad would have waited for the second ring," she said, and tapped the crossing point. "Look where the lines meet. That's where we go."
He lifted the dividers from the table and set one point in the dot. In her head the boat was already turning, the arrow pointing out past the breakwater, its diamond tip resting on the open sea like a hook set gently in a lip.
