Arrow and feather on a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A diagonal arrow runs from the ankle towards the top of the foot, with a small open circle along the shaft and an arrowhead at the upper end. The feather at the lower end is shaded in purple, blue and green, while the thin linework and shaft are dark. The foot rests on a pale blue, textured surface, and the toenails are painted purple.

Dear Tom,

The jackdaws have moved into the north tower again, so I have given up on the lower hall and taken my bench up to the arrow loft, where the light still falls through the slit. Father's bench, if you remember, with the knife notches along the edge. I am working through the last of the ash you cut before you left. Four dozen shafts are straight enough to take the goose feathers, and I have been fletching them the way he taught us, bindings tight and nocks cut square.
Mrs Harker from the village came up yesterday asking whether the mill men would be paid before Michaelmas. I told her I did not know, which is the truth. The roof has finally given way over the chapel, and rain drips steadily onto the old altar. Still, the kingfisher feathers you sent from the river came in the same post as your letter, and I have kept the best of them for one shaft alone. It is the only arrow I have dressed in blue and green, so that when it flies it should look like a cut through the water.
I have fixed a small iron ring on the shaft below the fletching, the one from Father's belt. When you come home you will know which arrow is yours, and you can tell me whether it flies true. If it does not, I will sit on the wall and wait for you to come up the hill with a poor story and a good excuse, the way you always did. The gate still opens if you push the left side.
